For many, nothing is scarier than thinking about death. In spite of this, people LOVE haunted houses. October sees dozens of terrifying pop-ups around Nashville promising blood-curdling scares and gristly murder. Some people say these scares are heart healthy because they allow you to experience fear in a safe place--you feel like you might be scared to death but walk out at the end totally unharmed. For people who especially skittish (like myself!) seeing behind the curtain and realizing the actors really weren't out to get you can help you realize that everything is ok.
A good estate planning experience can feel a little like a haunted house. You're thinking about scary things, like death and what will happen to your children once you are gone. But like a haunted house, it is a safe scare. Your attorney is there to tell you about potential dangers to your estate, but they are not out to get you. They can show you behind the curtain, discuss strategies for your estate, and guide you safely through putting together a plan. You might start out scared to death, but you will walk out of your consultation feeling confident that when you are gone, your family won't be haunted by probate delays or uncertainty in distribution.
